Macadamia Nut honey is a monofloral honey that is collected from the nectar and pollen of the Macadamia trees' white flowers. Its source was first originated in Australia and today, its supplied from the United States like California and Florida also.

However, the one produced in Hawaii is considered to be having a much higher concentration of Macadamia pollen and nectar than the honey produced in Australia because Hawaii has the best climate for Macadamia trees to grow.

Hawaii is the world's biggest producer of Macadamia Nuts, which automatically makes it the biggest producer of Macadamia honey. Australia is the 2nd largest Macadamia honey producer. Chocolate covered Macadamia nut is an attraction of the tourists, and it's Hawaii's top-selling souvenirs as it holds the title of most expensive nuts in the world.

Apart from Macadamia nuts, Hawaii has several unique products from Macadamia nuts such as Macadamia nut coffee, Macadamia wine, and not to mention Macadamia honey.

The reasons why Macadamia products are known for holding a badge of being expensive are –

  1. Macadamia nut trees take long 7-10 years to produce fruits.

  2. Increased labour cost has limited production. During the flowering season from February to early April, beekeepers can harvest only a limited amount.

  3. Macadamia trees are susceptible to pest infestation or disease outbreak. So, it needs the effort to maintain its health and productivity.

  4. Producers of Macadamia nuts are charging sky-high cost due to its increasing demand.

  5. It's expensive to buy and plant Macadamia nuts trees, even though Hawaii has the perfect climate to grow these crops.

The texture of this honey is soft and velvety and has a rich, dark amber colour. It's sweet honey and has an exciting aroma and distinctive taste of nuts with notes of chocolate and a delicious citrus tang.

After sitting on the shelf, even for a relatively short time, the high glucose content makes Macadamia honey vulnerable to crystallization.

This honey, whether used as a topping or used for baking, is exceptional. It is one of the best honey to be consumed straight from the bottle, with its exquisite sweetness and smooth texture. It goes scrumptiously well with fruit, ice-cream, vegetable salads, toasts and herbal tea.

If you want to use it as a tea sweetener or a cooking ingredient, however, it's going to be an expensive item. But, if you want to reward yourself with waffles, yoghurt or ice cream, then it's worth paying for it.

Benefits of Macadamia honey are that it has anti-bacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, other than being a potent antioxidant, and it's also useful as a probiotic and prebiotic which calms an upset stomach.
